While exploring the neighborhoods of San Francisco, I take photographs
of simple, common subjects found in daily life.  The contrast between these
subjects and the context of the urban environment is the focus of my paintings.
I emphasize this contrast by manipulating the landscape, bending and
twisting it into one that seems more ominous and impending, in an effort
to bring more focus to the subject as well as emphasize layers of depth.

Using my photographs, many times two or three of them, and through a
series of charcoal sketches I create my compositions, altering perspective,
scale, texture and atmosphere. I want the viewer to notice the paint and how
it is applied to the canvas while still holding to the figurative aspects of the
subjects I’ve chosen.  My use of color is bold, generalized and thoroughly mixed
on the palette, however some mixing may occur on the canvas. I have also
developed a painting stroke, which produces a “squiggled” texture and which
adds a rich, shimmering effect to the otherwise flat areas of my paintings.

Recently, however, I have been exploring the world of abstract art, some of
which is featured in this web site.
